Dr. Aarff.com: My dog clicks when she walks
Dear Dr. Aarff.com: Hi, Thank-you for taking the time to answer questions! I have a 10 year old Golden Retriever, Mandy, she has a clicking sound when she walks. I was told she needed surgury on the knees of her back legs. I am not sure it is worth the pain and recover at this stage of her life. She has started to pant constantly, is she is pain? If so how can I make her more comfortable, pain meds etc.?
Thank-you again!
Dr. Aarff.com: Liz, I’m really concerned to hear about the clicking in her knees. The meniscus is the ‘pad’ in the knees that helps to keep the bones (femur and tibia) from touching, if you’re hearing a clicking sound it could be that that pad is torn or damaged, which in people is reportedly one of the most painful things about having a knee injury due to the potential nerve exposure when that pad is damaged. Another possibility is “just” severe arthritis of the hips amd/or knees. If she is panting constantly, that certainly could be a sign of pain or of many other possible issues such as metabolic disease (like Cushings, hypothyroidism, diabetes), respiratory or cardiac problems, etc. I would absolutely consider consulting further with your veterinarian to determine the best course of action to help your pup. If they recommend surgery to correct what’s going on there, then definitely consider that recommendation seriously. Other options would be to consult with a veterinary surgeon, or even an acupuncturist to discuss pain control with alternative methods.
I’d love to hear how your girl does. Best of luck with her!
Sincerely,
Dr. Katy J. Nelson
