Has Your Pet Ever Embarrassed You?

I have been trying to get my dog Meeko to get use to a harness, per the advice of my veterinarian to limit the strain around his little doggy neck.  One of my good friends bought one for me and let me tell you, his coughing and hacking has improved tremendously.  However, one thing that’s come out of this…he’s stubborn as hell when I walk him now.

He’ll be trotting along during our long walks, no strain around his neck… he’s free and feelin’ groovy and then the next thing I know he’ll stop in his tracks and plant his paws firmly on the pavement and won’t move.  I’m talking he will not move.  In fact, I’ve even seen him look at me and turn his head  in the opposite direction and tilt his head up in defiance.  It really is hilarious.  I recently moved to a new neighborhood and, on occasion, one of my new neighbors will pass me by with their well-trained dog and say, “oh, you’re dog is in training?”  That’s because they see me standing next to Meeko saying those training words like “come, now, go, walk or what’s wrong with you!”

photoAs you may know, Meeko is 13 and is an extremely low-key well-trained fella, but he’s also set in his ways.  The first week of breaking in the harness was just as unpleasant for me as it was for him.   Standing in place on the sidewalk for minutes at a time trying to wait him out was plain old embarrassing.

I’m happy to report, the harness is now Meeko’s friend, and of course Meeko will always be my best bud.
