Don't Scare the Daylights Out of Your Pet

Halloween is just five days away, and I know where my dog Meeko will be….in our house. Halloween night really isn’t the best time to show off your pet’s costume, keep the little guy inside.

Our friends at the Sacramento SPCA gave us some tips to pass along to you to keep your pet safe and sound and not to scare the daylights out of your pet this Halloween:

It’s important to remember that companion animals rely on daily routine, and when their routine is interrupted by the noise of a ringing doorbell and strangers in unusual clothing, pets can become frightened, agitated and distressed.

To help people keep their pets safe on Halloween, the Sacramento SPCA recommends taking these precautions:

Keep pets safely inside. Provide a safe, quiet place for pets away from trick-or-treaters and other Halloween activities. Cats, especially black ones, may be the target of pranksters. In addition, frequently opened doors provide a perfect opportunity for escape, which can go unnoticed during all the commotion.
Keep candy out of your pet’s reach. Candy can be harmful to pets and chocolate is toxic.
Keep pets away from decorations. Candles in jack-o-lanterns can quickly singe, burn or set fire to a pet’s fur. Pets can become tangled in hanging decorations like streamers and can choke on some decorations if they chew them.
Don’t bring the family dog along for trick-or-treating. The commotion and costumes can be very scary.
And remember that a collar, license and microchip are your pet’s best ticket home in the case of an unfortunate escape.
