When I adopted my sweet puppy Emma at 7 weeks, we were both convinced that if we did all the necessary training and socialization, everyone would love her!
However, as she started “working” with me at the office each day, we noticed some senior dogs were put off by her. Bao, a 4-year-old Yorkie, is extremely territorial of her space with Emma and another senior dog Lincoln didn’t want her around at all.
If someone doesn’t like her, Emma’s philosophy is to just try harder. After all, doesn’t it make perfect sense when someone isn’t a fan of yours to just continue to be in their face and show just how much you want to be friends? Emma has tried everything with her foes in the office. She has shared her treats and she has tried to let them snuggle in her bed (or climb in theirs). This method has only worked with Cleo, a little older Pit mix.
For Lincoln and Bao, we have approached Emma’s friendship pursuits more strategically. With Bao, we meet in more neutral areas like meeting rooms or outside for potty breaks. Lincoln hasn’t been in the office much lately, but we have had a few supervised play sessions on neutral ground as well. We love PetSafe dog parks!
Emma loves to play with everyone, regardless of how they feel about her. Luckily, we have been able to smooth over some of those who have had problems with her and ensure she is a good playmate.
What about you? Does your dog get along with everyone, or only have a few close friends?
